Kinross Woolshed

This iconic 1890s shearing shed has been reimagined into a layered hospitality venue that blends rustic heritage with bold regional design. The revitalised space includes a sports bar, bistro, function room, and soon, a six-lane bowling alley.

Rich in local character, the project celebrates Australiana nostalgia while inviting a new generation to gather and connect.

“We aimed to honour everything the locals already know and love about Kinross —its character, its history, its role as a gathering spot—while gently ushering in a new chapter.”

– Dana Hutchins, Project Lead, Senior Associate

Familiar but refreshed.

Originally built in the 1890s and relocated to Albury in the 1980s, the former shearing shed now reflects both its heritage and its evolving role in regional life. The venue unfolds across a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, including a bistro, sports bar, gaming lounge, function room and a new six-lane bowling alley.

We looked to the textures and tones of rural Australia for inspiration – CWA halls, pub counters, verandahs and weathered timber – all subtly reinterpreted to create a sense of warmth, character and place.

Our approach was to retain the raw honesty of the original woolshed, in its scale, structure and materiality, while introducing bold, contemporary elements that speak to nostalgia in a fresh and playful way.

Bursting with bright colours and bold, cheeky patterns, it’s a joyful throwback to simpler times and good old-fashioned fun. Form, materiality and styling evoke nostalgia for the past and celebrate everything Australiana.

Throughout the venue, materiality reinforces the brief’s call for durability and warmth—timber, terrazzo, plaid textiles and patinated metals combine to create an inviting, layered experience.

From layout to lighting, every element was considered through the lens of community, connection and longevity. Kinross is not a reinvention—it’s a confident next chapter in a well-loved local story.
